Victoria and her Hussar (Viktoria und ihr Husar)

Victoria and her Hussar (Viktoria und ihr Husar)

“Victoria and her Hussar” is an Operetta in three acts by Paul Abraham with a libretto by Alfred Grunwald and Fritz Lohner-Beda, and it plays the love story between beautiful Victoria and Koltay Hussar.

The subject of the Operetta and the idyll of the two carries us, one by one, from the sunny landscape of Japan, to the picturesque St. Petersburg, then arriving in a small town in Hungary. The first world war and the years that followed, put their love to great trials.

Victoria, believing her lover dead in the war, marries a distinguished American diplomat, by his name John Cunlight. But life brings Victoria back, face to face with Koltay, her first love.

“The audience will enjoy a beautiful show, both for the eyes and for the ears, on Paul Abraham’s music. This is a balance between comedy, drama, dance, music and theatre, which will induce a well-being. In addition, the piece takes us through three different geographical areas, each with a different theme, both in terms of the scenery, as well as the music and the relationship between the characters.”

The National Theatre of Operetta and Musical “Ion Dacian” offered us in the hall of The Children’s Palace Theater, a long-awaited public premiere of “Victoria and Her Hussar” by Paul Abraham. We must admit, from the beginning, that there is an operetta audience eager to see the classic performances of this genre, to applaud their favorite performers and to enjoy arias, duets or couplets specific to the operetta style.

Returning many years ago, in 1975, to the historic headquarters of the Splai Operetta and then to the National Theatre, I saw this well-known work directed by master George Zaharescu, with famous performers in the main roles: Cleopatra Melidoneanu with Eugen Fânățeanu, Nicolae Țăranu (in the ambassador Cunlight, in both castings), Vali Niculescu with G. Hazgan (in the couple Riquette – Ianczi), Mihaela Mijea and Eugen Savopol (O Lia San – Berry) in the first cast and Valeria Rădulescu – Dorin Teodorescu (Victoria – Koltay), Daniela Diaconescu – George Niculescu (Riquette – Ianczi), Mireille Constantinescu – I. Dinu, in the second cast. Liviu Kavassi was at the orchestra desk. This time, the Operetta offers us a fresh show, in a new version.

    Dr. Mihai-Alexandru Canciovici

In a room unsuitable for a musical show (the Great Hall of the Children’s Palace), which requires amplification and with a pit far below the stage, the team of the National Operetta and Musical Theatre “Ion Dacian” proposed to us (Sunday, April 23), ” front page” from browsing a new show album. Premiere with Victoria and her hussar by Paul Abraham. They did it with enthusiasm, humility for a glorious past, but, above all, with ambition. The general note of the whole evening was the effort, the desire to prove that there are also talented and hardworking artists at the Operetta, who want to honor their status, if they are left and if they have a place.
Even before the curtain was raised, the emotion of the moment was felt, either at Interim General Manager Bianca Ionescu, attentive to all the details of the evening, either to spectators interested in this return, or to many of the current members of the team present in public (Gladiola Niţulescu Lamatic, Alfredo Pascu) or to some of the former “stars” of the genre, who came to applaud their colleagues in May young people (eg Cleopatra Melidoneanu, Constanţa Câmpeanu, choreographer Andreea Constantinescu, ballerina Marina Hudac, etc.). Along with all of them were and singing teachers at the University of Music in Bucharest: Maria Hurduc, Silvia Voinea, Cristina Soreanu, Ionel Voineag. So good world, connoisseurs of music.

    Luminiţa Constantinescu

In the second part of this season, the concerns of the management of National Theatre of Opera and Musical “Ion Dacian” have adapted to the reception of the condition confrontations necessary for the prestige of this institution to exceed the loss of the altitude of the theatrical musical genre that had been consecrated by previous successes.
